El estrés crónico es un factor de riesgo bien documentado para una serie de problemas de salud, incluidas las enfermedades cardiovasculares y la depresión. Los meta-análisis muestran que las intervenciones basadas en la reducción del estrés, como la meditación y el mindfulness, tienen un impacto significativo en la mejora de la salud mental y física, por ejemplo disminuyendo los niveles de ansiedad (Hoge et al., 2013) o de dolor crónico (Goyal et al., 2014).
